Man of Vision (1991)

The sculpture standing in the entryway of the Haas College Center is a bronze monument of the Lutheran pastor and college namesake, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg. It is entitled Man of Vision and was created by Stanley Wanlass (born 1941), a sculptor from Oregon who is known for his bronze creations. The piece was commissioned by Ray Holland, an Allentown businessman, and his wife Thelma. It was dedicated to Muhlenberg College in 1991.

The monument depicts Muhlenberg standing on what appears to be stones lining a path. This is said to possibly symbolize the long journey he took in spreading Lutheran doctrine throughout America, as a pastor and missionary. Establishing the Lutheran Church in America was his greatest mission and accomplishment, and he was known for founding the Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania in 1748 before moving on to New York City and working to found churches and ministries there. He is depicted in a contemplative and poised manner with the wind blowing his hair and cloak behind him.
