Vigilance (1973)

Vigilance by Victor Riu (1887-1974), located outside of Seeger's Union in Parents' Plaza, was completed and brought to campus in 1973. It depicts the semi-abstracted form of a woman and was constructed using granite and stone. It was created as a memorial to Sidney G. Weikert, Muhlenberg alumnus and staff member. The piece was funded by the Sidney Weikert memorial fund, largely orchestrated by the junior class at the time, as well as friends and colleagues of Weikert. The money was raised through a variety of campus fundraising events such as the ODK carnival, which raised about $400. One student, Demetrios Papacostas, even sold his paintings to contribute to the fund. The artist, Victor Riu, founded the Coopersburg granite company and was an artist who specialized in memorial work.

Sidney G. Weikert was an alumnus of Muhlenberg College who joined the staff in 1965 as an admissions counselor before being promoted to assistant director of admissions. He became an associate director in 1972, and was an active member of the Muhlenberg community. He died at the age of 31 on December 19th, 1972.
