In May of 1996, Muhlenberg administrators were faced with the reality of a housing shortage, with a record enrollment of 1,760 students pending for the fall. They hired GE Capital of King of Prussia to construct a four-story dormitory, capable of housing 113 students, over the summer of 1996. This dormitory was a first for Muhlenberg, a modular structure in which each unit--typically two dorm rooms and their connecting section of hallway--was constructed individually off-site, delivered, and installed via crane. The dormitory was designed by Spillman Farmer Shoemaker Pell Whildin of Bethlehem, and was to be located between Brown Hall and the old Commons building (now Walson), a space occupied at the time by volleyball courts. Ground was broken for the new dormitory on June 6, 1996.

Students who had been staying at a local Ramada Inn moved in at the end of September, 1996.

For three years after its completion, the dorm was known as New West Hall. At a Board of Trustees meeting in October, 1999, a vote was held to rename the building, and the adjacent Brown Mall, in honor of Kathryn P. Taylor, businessperson and spouse of President Arthur Taylor (1992-2002).

Today, Taylor Hall houses upperclass students in double rooms. There is a computer lab, lounge and kitchen in the basement and study lounges located on the first and fourth floors.
